what actions does the CDROM do is it powering up at all
check to make sure you have the IDE cables attached firmly and exchange the molex cable with another availible one
I hope that someday we will be able to put away our fears and prejudices and just laugh at people.

    I don't think it's an IDE CD-ROM.

That's pretty ancient kit to be trying to get to work in Win9x, eg there aren't any Win9x drivers for CDR-H94A.

However the problem may not be the CD drivers, if the interface is proprietary on the sound card, it probably needs to be initialised with a DOS program in AUTOEXEC.BAT. Older Analog Devices chips for example don't do anything until the SNDINIT.EXE program is run with switches to set the port addresses etc.

Do you have the installation disks for the sound card?

that model of card has IDE, SONY & PANASONIC interfaces on it, im thinking that you are possibly using the SONY interface, if this is the case then you need to install the sound drivers,

but in all honesty, attempting to install 98 on a machine that old really isnt worth spending the time on.

but if your serious about installing it, after you get the CDRom working

this is the command you need to run

    setup /nm /im
All sorts of wonderful things in life.
