Microsoft trying to destroy the Internet? (!)
(initial post edited and replaced; full text is left below for reference)
On further reflection, I believe Microsoft is in fact TRYING to destroy the Internet.
FACT: IF the status quo remains unchanged, Windows XP will result in the Internet degenerating into chaos within a couple of years.
FACT: The only way to solve this problem will be to institute highly regulated WANs to replace it. WANs where people's software can be updated and patched from a central server, automatically, preferably right down to the OS level.
FACT: Microsoft wants people buying software as a subscription, and wants to tie them to Microsoft 100% - OS, applications, and networking.
FACT: A privately run WAN has almost no government regulation, and the company owning it can do pretty much whatever it wants. No privacy. No laws regarding compatibility with other software or OSes. No nothing but what the company wants to provide you with - whether or not you want it provided (remember Internet Explorer, Windows Media Player 7+, etc.)
FACT: A company that bundles its version of these new WANs with the most popular OS on the planet is going to get very, very rich.
END RESULT: The Internet is dead. Long Live Bill Gates.
Anybody think this is paranoid ranting?

-After reading completely Steve Gibson's articles at www.grc.com on the DDOS vulnerabilities of Windows XP, I'm scared. I can seriously see the Internet being rendered unusable within two years. And frankly, I LIKE the Internet, so I don't want this to happen.
I am looking at ways of trying to start a movement to get an emergency temporary injunction against the sale of Windows XP until this issue is addressed.
I don't think it has a chance in h&^% really, but it can't cost M$ an awful lot to fix the problem, and if they see it's cheaper to fix the problem than to fight a legal battle, they may do so.
What do you guys all think? Would the average techie support this or oppose it? Do you have any advice or comments?

Hopefully it won't get to that point. But if I could do something to help by signing something, then show me where to sign and I'm there!

Well, I don't think you're paranoid, and I certainly don't think you'll have any problem getting techs to back you up...but we are but a few. The unwashed masses don't know or don't care what M$ does, and won't see this as being relevant to them.
Cobra: Dad, will you sign this petition to keep Microsoft from taking over the Internet?
Dad: Hmmmm...if they do, will I still be able to get on E-Bay?
Cobra: I don't know.
Dad: Well, I'm not signing a damn thing until you find out!
Sadly, this isn't far from the truth...bottom line...and we all know how Uncle Bill operates - if something's successful, he'll try to take it over, or kill and create a similar product. MSN isn't doing the business Bill thought it would...so I wouldn't put it past him to try to wipe out the Net and then go with that WAN project Clam was talking about.

Gee, and here I thought AOL was the one trying to take over the internet and replace it with their own WAN technologies......

Actually I have further reconsidered this matter some more... here's my new thoughts...
#1: Normal people and political action won't stop M$. What it would take is a friggin' huge army of lawyers. So if anyone is gonna stop them, it's gotta be someone like AOL Time Warner who stand to lose billions if things go this way.
#2: I'm thinking it must be possible to render the existing Internet more resistant to DDOS attacks anyways, but this effort would have to be made by people like Shaw@Home and the other big ISPs. Surely they would be able to detect home users launching Zombie attacks and shut them out of the system? Does anybody know the technical aspects of this? Then, the problem becomes a mechanical one of forcing all ISPs to institute DDOS detection/shutout software and/or hardware.
#3: I am sure that if M$ DOES set up a new Internet, we'll all still be in jobs. I'm not cutting down the tree I'm sitting in here. However, you won't be able to get onto this substitute Internet with your Linux boxes and Macs. And M$ will control who can have websites on this Internet and who can't.
#4: If this IS all true, I can't possibly be the only person who has thought of it. AOL must already have a huge team of lawyers on the subject, right?
Sorry, although I have always been paranoid and cynical, I'm not normally the doomsday prophet type...

Everyone who's played Deus Ex knows that Internet 3 is being monitored by the Eschelon IV AI from the government's secret base at Area 51 using the Aquinas Protocol.

Well, has anyone considered NOT going to XP? I am tired of people thinking they need to upgrade just because M$ says it's time to do so. Every time I think about M$ I start to get sick.
