Post Sony Guarantee - UK

I have a Sony DVD-ROM, which is giving me trouble. I purchased it in August 2001. I returned it to the store where I bought it, but they said they couldn't find a fault with it. I contacted Sony Europe, who are the Tech Help for Sony in England. They said, after hearing my complaints, that it did sound as though the Drive was faulty and that I should contact Avery Berkel, who are the UK Service Agents for Sony, and request them to repair it under guarantee. However, on contacting Avery Berkel I was told that they had been instructed by Sony to only carry out guarantee repairs where the product was under 1 year old FROM THE DATE OF MANUFACTURE, and not from the date of purchase. They said that they had received lots of complaints about this. I told them what I thought of the Situation, and they told me to get back to Sony Europe. I did this, and they said there was nothing else I could do, and suggested that I either pay for a repair or throw it away. I asked for the number of Customer Services in the UK. However, ringing them only brought the response that they weren't responsible for Computer Products, and told me to contact Sony Europe again. I told them that as a responsible company would they please get me the address of someone who would confirm that Sony were no longer giving a year guarantee from date of purchase on Sony Computer Products, and he said he would try and would telephone me back. I am still waiting!

Is Sony doing this in the USA?

stinks ,, got sony,s page open now www.sony.co.uk and gone to the UK page , then support.

on the last line (but one) "where do i get a sony product repaired" (enter)

Q: my product is under guarentee.

A: in the unlikly event that a product proves faulty within "ONE YEAR FROM THE DATE OF PURCHACE"

etc etc etc ,,,,(will not cut and paste),

print that out , complete with e-mails etc from sony ,,go to the dealer (retailer) and say "i wan,t it repaired" if he refuses then go (with the paperwork to the local trading standards ,,,they arn,t gonna do sony ,,,but under UK law it,s the retailer that your warrenty is with.

ie: swop it for a new one ,,u get sony to fix that one

we get conned all over the place in "rip off" britain.

PS fugitsu UK will not honour any drives in the uk ,,,u have to go thru a "recognised" retailer ,,,they will not deal with j.public.

    Exclamation

Sony are off my list of munufacturers (Firmware? What's that....? )......

No doubts! their warranty in the UK is Pants!

Freddy has it right with Trading Standards, collect up your evidence and go do an impersination of 'Annoyed of Croydon' or me!

I'd say you are entitled to a replacement if its of the 'it don't do...' variety of fault, especially if trading standards ring 'em up

Update:- Sony UK have now apologised and informed me that the Guarantee period through their Repair Agents is 15 months from date of manufacture and not 12 months as I had been told. They say they introduced this as so many people have trouble producing proof of purchase.

when u take it out of the box , just pray that the Mfg date is more than 12m or it is eating into your "statutory" 12m warranty.

To put this bluntly $ollocks !!!! , your warrenty with the retail outlet is 12m (one year) FROM THE DAY Of PURCHACE ,,,tell sony.uk to f.off u are entitled to 12m warrenty ,,,,

go show this to trading standards, they will laugh at sony.uk

ps : remember ,,,your warrenty is with retailer ,,,HE pays postage/carrage NOT u

Hi, I agree with you entirely. I am sure that PC World, Currys Dixons etc will use their own tioll receipts as a guarantee and I am sure there would be no trouble getting them to exchange or repair items. The trouble comes with OEM products or small retailers. The UK repair Agents for Sony are Avery Berkel on 08701555555. They are not happy with the policy either but Sony have brought it in.

The situation you are in stinks, without a doubt, and the Sony DVD player that i was going to order for my soon to be updated system, will now be a Toshiba one. However, what we really want to know now is - have you got it back and is it fixed? Somehow, i don't think we've heard the last of this one
