How do you discover new music?
Besides listening to the radio, how do you discover new music?
One thing we have been doing lately is using the new show Smallville. At the end of the show they show the album covers for whose music played.
There was one group I had never heard of called OnesideZero. They had a pretty darn cool song on Smallville. Anyone else watch that show?
If it aint broke, TWEAK it!
When in doubt, throw it out!!

I mainly listen to rock. And KSJO plays the type of music I enjoy. So I just check their playlist for cool new music: http://www.ksjo.com/playlist.html

Radio and anything that hits the "charts" is usually watered down and crappy - at least to me. I can't listen to the drek I hear on the airwaves or in videos.
I look at the sound tracks from films that I like and get the CD of the band or sometimes DL the mp3's before going out to buy it.
A lot of the things I listen to come from small labels and they often put out compilation CD's and you can get a flavor for the different bands they have.
I also follow what the artists from my favorite bands and see what other bands they are in and pick up their work as well.
I also rely on friend to make recomendations. In this case I usually have to DL the mp3's to check it out first or at least have to hear it.

Well if you're referring to my post about radio, and if you took a look at the KSJO main homepage, then you'd see it's PAY-FOR-PLAY weekend. And if mainstream music isn't your bag, then that means, no watered down crappy music. You pay $25 which goes to charity, and you can have ANY song you want played on KSJO. And I mean ANYTHING. It's a good opportunity for local bands to get their music heard. And guess what!! Everybody here can listen to it because it's broadcast over the internet. Check out the sight to see (www.ksjo.com). Damn! KSJO should give me some money for plugging their station so much.

Whenever I go on a trip and my son uses my "company" car while I'm gone he usually leaves one of his own CD's in the player.....
I never listen to music radio so unless somebody gives me a CD or one gets left in my car, I just keep on listening to the same stuff over and over (I carry about 120 CD's in my car). When my son leaves something I like I usually go to the store and buy a couple more by the same artist if they have more than one CD published....

We posted at the same time - I wasn't referring to your post. Still, I can almost guarantee that if it's on the radio it's probably crap. Well, maybe it's not all crap but the way I see things is that I listen to band A. Band A is “edgy” and “risqué” and does not have commercial acceptance. Band B hears the sound and incorporates it into a more mainstream sound and get snatched up by a giant music company. Giant music company begs/coerces/pays the radio stations to play it’s music. The masses eat up whatever is put on their plate thinking that it is the best new thing going and begin to buy, buy, buy. Now giant music company looks for and finds Bands c, d, e, f, g, h and several others who sound like band B and begin to market them in the same way. If Bands c, d, e, f, g, h do not sound exactly like Band B then the music company gives them a producer who makes damn sure they sound like Band B. Radio stations are simply the lackeys of the media giants who do not support true talent and innovation and are only in it for the buck. **** them.
Now – I’m not a total music nazi. There are several bands that break through despite the music companies strangle hold on what is played and what is not but they are few and far between.

I started to post earlier but took much longer than you did to post. IE - I clicked post reply before you did but took like a half an hour to post it (I had to go potty).

Wow man!!! That's way too much analysis for something that's just meant to be entertainment......I have an easier solution. If I find something I like, I listen to it--a lot. If I find something I don't like, I don't listen to it--and don't give it another thought....

I find most of the decent stuff by accident.
As with ilovetheusers: stuff that is generated by the mass media congolmerates, and spoon fed to the less mentallgy agile among us, just pisses me off.
Im a big fan of:
The Cruel Sea: Great Aussie band, been doing the muso scene longer than Ive been alive. They rock.
Something For Kate: Another great Aussie band. Been doing it long enough to be wise about it, but are still young people. Band writes their own music, and its often rather soulful.
Eskimo Joe: Aussie band (see a theme here?) These guys are in their late teens / early 20's, and have an incredible amount of talent. They touch on issues common to us all, and dont peddle crap for / to anyone.

I downloaded Spinner as it sounded good but had loads of probs with it exiting constantly. On consulting the Spinner forums, the general consensus seemed to be "Uninstall Spinner and get the WinAmp plugin, SpinAmp" which i did. It uses spinner.com still but just loads a different front end. All working a-ok now, so i owe you one for the initial heads-up. Just posting this in case anyone else has probs. Get SpinAmp here.
