I'd have a hard time choosing between WinXP and Win2000, as long as the game is compatible.

XP pro or home, 2000 pro, or 98...if you still have it around...
I would send the money on a lower end Geforce 4...it will boost your 3d mark!

Windows XP without a doubt for gaming. Linux for hosting the server. Alot of times if there is not a full version of the game for linux you can find a file that will allow you to run a server for the game.

Probably XP, though I haven't found many things that won't run on 2k.
My dedicated games PC's a 386/40 with 6Meg of RAM, a 512k ISA grahphics card and DOS 5. Why? Here's the last two lines of the autoexec.bat:
cd\
elite.bat
I'm in charge and I say we blow it up

98 or ME. Lots of classic games like Duke Nukem, etc, won't run on 2000 or even XP. My friend just finished an ME/XP dual boot...uses XP for most stuff, switches to ME for old games
I also have several games that won't run on XP...example, NFS3.

The only catch is that you (well, myself at least) have to manually configure the 3D device. Look in the game directory structure, there is an exe file in there somewhere that has to do with 3D setup. Run it, make the proper selection, and put the pedal to the metal

Should have made a poll on this but I'd say 98 or XP pro
I hope that someday we will be able to put away our fears and prejudices and just laugh at people.
