Apple Mac G3 & G4 Question
Hi all, there must be some Mac gurus out there, lets find out!
My question is simple, I need to know the difference between a Mac G3 and G4. I also need to know the advantages of a G4 over a G3.
The reason? We need to get a Mac G4 in our Lab but our european colleagues are blocking the purchase, saying we don't need one if we have a G3, because they are exactly the same. Now we know they are different, and OSX always seems to run better on a G4. In fact it runs on a G4 and not on a G3, (in my humble experience).
I need some ammo to change the minds of our european colleagues, (more like enemies!!).
Thanks in advance...

The dif in my opinion (I run a network of macs, around 100 of em) is like comparing a pentium 2 to a pentium 4, they are much much faster, the machines even at the same mhz rating are quite dif. The G4 boots roughly 20% faster. it copies data 50-60% faster. The performance increase in apps like photoshop are very small, however rendering and things like movie editing seem to be about 25% faster.
I done some reading on benchmarks and they say that the fractals program runs 400% better on the G4, almost 100% better when converting video, about 40% better at mp3 conversion, but lacks about 10% when using stuffit.
It will also run OSX much better than the G3, we have only 1 machine running a G3 and let me tell you its slower than frozen grandma in OSX

Well the biggest improvement that they might understand is the addition of the Velocity Engine...you might call it Apple's MMX. It will speed up everything a little bit, but if it's coded especially for it the increase it dramatic! They also have better dual-proc support, which OSX would love to have...but that might be a hard sell. Check out this page for more info on the G4 CPU:
http://www.apple.com/powermac/processor.html
You should be able to gather some nice info from there! You could also try checking the archives of MacAddict and Macworld to see the intial review of the G4, which should compare them to the G3. Good luck on getting them...BTW, what you doing with the old one I still don't have a Mac...if you want to sell, let me know!
