Bios update error
When I attempt to update my bios on my abit KR7A-raid board I get an “unknown flash type” error. Has anyone seen this before, or know what might be wrong? I am using an old 98se boot disk to boot into dos. Is this incorrect? I am running XPpro

You need a "clean" DOS boot disk. No himem.sys, autoexec.bat, etc.

You can create a clean dos boot diskette diskette in xp - format a diskette with system files. The error you are getting is normally associated with using the wrong bios file or the wrong flash executable... Check that you have downloaded the correct bios for the board and the correct flash util for the bios.

rename your autoexec.bat and config.sys on your 98 boot disc, and reboot, nothing should be loaded then.
and try again, of course the board may have a flash protect jumper on it..
good luck.

Got the cd that came with the mobo? The right flash util is often on there...

There is an older version of the flash utility, but no bios file (kr7aXX.bin).

It is the flash utility that is probably giving you fits. The bios file itself is probably fine.

Is there any specific reason why you are flashing your BIOS? Usually the general rule is "if ain't broke, don't fix it".
Is there a specific issue that you are trying to resolve? Or is the a newer feature in this updated BIOS that you need to take advantage of?
Just wondering. I'd hate to see someone kill their board for no reason.

OK, look in your mobo manual, is there any reference to "BIOS flash protect"??
if so, make sure you set it to disable so you can update your BIOS, then enable it once the flash is complete.
As NooNoo has suggested, look at my bookmarks and read Ruslans posts, they will be more indepth that I can ever be.
Good Luck.
