Auto detect hard drive
Ok. I got a friends computer, it was the subject of another thread, i just got around to getting a hard drive.
I got a 40 gig 7200 RPM hd for a good price but the mobo is having a hard time detecting it. like not at all.
this is my model number of the mobo
m585lmr - PCChips
Under the hard drive settings in the bios i have it on AUTO and when the comp starts up it says auto detecting primary master IDE...press f4 to skip.
i have let it sit but to no avail.
i took the jumper completely off, as it is a WD drive and it said for single or master to remove the jumper, i also tried it in the default position.
how do I get the hard drive to detect?
tia

nevermind I figured it out.
i had to use two jumpers, and run the software included with the drive
it helps to read the documentation
thanks

Ok I lied.
I probably need to update the bios.
I successfully formatted and loaded win 98se only to find out the drive is only showing 25.5 gig
Will updating my bios solve this problem?
Thanks again.
Sorry for the hassle.

sounds a very wierd figure
try fdisk (from a DOS prompt) I think option 4 ,,info and check that there is only 1 partition ,,,,if u have multiple partitions , or extended/non dos ,,,,then by all means use partition magic ,,,,but might be quicker to fdisk - remove ALL partitions ,,and create ONE partition then , format it.
good luck FtF

BIOS update can solve the problem, if that BIOS is fresh enough...for supporting 40Gig drives it should be dated by year 2000... if not - sorry, only 32Gig is your max...
Or you'll have to use hacker utils for fixing that bug made by BIOS software programmers... and some experience needed...
WinNT- based OSes can see large drives directly even without BIOS support, but you should run that OS from another, smaller drive...

here is the page with the bios utils on it
To flash a bios get a nice clean diskette
Format it with the system files checked.
Add the bios flash file and the flash util
then it is a matter of flashutil biosfilename
And pray there is no power outtage
here is a how to

Ok I got the AwardBios Utility...
I made a system disk with AWD814C.exe on the diskette and 2K1120S.bin on the diskette.
i typed AWD814C 2k11202
it asked me if I wanted to save the old bios
i said yes
it saved it, then it said in the message box, source file not found....what did i do wrong?

well.
i added the .bin and everything went good, it updated and i followed directions and it restarted, said update success and booted to windows.
checked C: drive for capacity still same old 25.5...
I then rebooted, went into the bios to make sure settings where all ok. i did the ide hdd detection...didn't change anything.
exited bios....then blackness.
i mean, i got the right bios update....wtf?

Find the reset cmos jumper - usually near the battery - short it for 30 seconds - try again
