playing audio CDs i Win XP Media Player

I am not sure if this is a driver problem or not. I have a basic CD & a CD/RW drive; both work fine except I cannot play audio CDs in WIn XP Media Player - Med Pl. does not seem to be able to see either drive which has the CD or CD/RW.
    Any help would be welcome.
    Thanks in advance.

When you put a music cd in, do you get an autoplay window up? If you do, what happens when you click play with media player?

If you open media player and say File Open then can you see the cdrom?

Does either of your cd drives have an audio cable hooked to the sound card?

In control panel, sounds and audio devices, hardware, click on one of your cd drives, click properties, properties tab, check the box, enable digital CD Audio for this CD-Rom device.

    Just another thought
Do any of the Audio CDs your trying contain any form of antipiracy encryption device i.e. they will play in standard CD players but not normally play in devices attached to PCs.

Yes There is an audio cable from each CD drive to my SB sound card & digital audio CD is enables.
The music CD does not have any encryption and has played before

How many CDs have you tried? Does it happen with all of them? Did you create any of the audio CDs that you are trying to use?

I have tried various CDs, none of my own making; all to no avail.

The MCI device error sounds like it might be the problem. Here is what Microsoft says about MCI,

MCI is high-level control software that provides a device-independent interface to multimedia devices and media files. MCI includes a command-message interface and a command-string interface. These interfaces are supported by both IBM and Microsoft.

I am not an XP wizard unfortunatly, but is it possible to uninstall and reinstall XP's Media Player? If it is, try that next.

Thanks, I think you may be correct, but I don't think you can uninstall & re-install Media Player - I have tried installing Media Player 9 but although it seemed to work, I got the message that installation was not completed. I still could not play music CDs and have removed Media Player 9.
