HP Pavillion 6635 OnBoard Sound Problems
All Right, here is the skinny.
My cousin brought me his computer (HP Pavillion 6635 w/ Win98SE) because he wasn't getting any sound. So I take a look and see that there were some problems with the drivers according to Device Manager. So I go to HP's website and download the drivers, install them and all looks good (again according to Device Manager). I reboot and notice that there isn't any sound playing. Well I go into Control Panel\Multimedia and notice that under "Playback Device" the preferred device is "No Playback Device". Now, I've uninstalled, reinstalled newer/older drivers to no avail. Is there something I'm missing?
Thanks in advance,

did you check to see that onboard sound is enabled in the bios?
Run SFC for extra insurance that the o/s is not missing files.
I hope that someday we will be able to put away our fears and prejudices and just laugh at people.

Yeah, it's enabled in the BIOS.
I'll try SFC and see what that comes up with.
Is SFC a valid command in 98SE?

Intel Mod
In Multimedia on the Devices tab, in the Properties for your sound card in Audio Devices, "do not use audio features on this device" hasn't got set has it?
Have you tried the Device Manager in Safe Mode in case there are any "phantoms" from the previous installs?
SFC is in 98SE, usually found in \WINDOWS\SYSTEM

I tried Device Manager in Safe Mode and there were some "phantoms" of a few things. I removed everythng and let Windows reinstall everything and now I'm jamming to some tunes from my cousin's computer!!

I have seen this also on an HP that I worked on in the bios the onboard sound was disabled and he only had the onboard sound so I enabled it and when I got to the desktop there was no sound. I went back into the bios and disabled it and bingo the sound worked go figure so I left it that way and sofar everything has been running great its been 6 months now since I worked on it but try it and see if that might fix the prob.
