    Exchange 5.5 deleted folders question

Is there a way to set the Exchange server to completely delete items older than 30 days in the "Deleted" folder, or does this have to be done through Outlook on every computer?

Have a problem here with tons of data in the Deleted folder..

    Thanks.

    yes... sorta...

    using the exchange administrator....

you can set it for by mailbox.. by choosing that mail boox under recipient and choose protperies, Then click the limits tab, the set the autodelete after xx days. and unchek the dont do this is infomation store hasnt been backed up.

This will make sure it cleans all mail over 30days (for example) out.

Sponge, how long does it take for that option to take effect?

Does it only apply to items deleted after you set the date, or will it remove items older than xx days that have already been deleted before the option was selected?

I set it for my account for trial, but the mail is still there

Make sure you have gone to file->exit and log off-> in Outlook and then re-open it. Should delete mail after that.
The truth is out there, you just need to decrypt it.

    no.. wasn't it..

looking at the time of log 1207 it happens everyday at around 4am, so I'll have to wait until then.

    thanks for all the help.

    nope. nothing.

item retention is set at 10 days, but i still have all of my deleted emails.

    am i missing something..?

going to go research MS tech database, in the meanwhile open to all suggestions. thanks

edit: The Deleted Items K is showing up as 0 for all the users in the Private Information Store.

is something disabled? We have gigs of Deleted data... and it is on the server, not the client computers.

    There is another way...

You can use Exchange Mailbox Manager... it comes w/ the 5.5 CD. It's an Add-in. With that you can setup a daily maintenance of the Information Store to delete items older than xx days in any folder or in the public folders. It's a great tool but can be dangerous. We used it to delete messages in mailboxes that were older than 1000 days.

run the information store optimizer... or jetpack.. what ever M$ is calling it now... it will clean up the loose records in the database.

do it AFTER you have a good backup and after regular hours... just in case.
