    Watching dvd movies in XP

    Hey all,
I don't have XP at work, so I'm not sure if you can watch DVD movies with XP Home Edition. I thought you could use WMP 8.0 to watch DVD movies. I just talked to one of my coworkers and they say I need to buy the software like Windvd or Cyberlink to watch movies. Can you watch movies with WMP and if so, how? Thanks
I think the problem is either an ID10T or PEBCAK error

That reminds me of the thing I saw on regedit, com telling you how to do a registry edit to allow "Microsoft Media Player to Play and Open DVDs" you might want to give that a shot too.

    Full details here

interesting link. I gave it a shot here, but no dice. . . . . . I didn't have that registry entry so I added it, but it didn't make a difference. WMP says no disc in drive. so I go through my computer and double click the dvd and get this

I've seen similar reg hacks for the mp3 encoding capabilities (that didn't work for me.) I suspect they worked with the release candidate versions of XP but probably stopped working on retail versions and definately by SP1.

Well I would hazard a guess that might just be a codec thing. I have a dozen or so laptops at work that are running XP pro, and have dvd drives and they all play thru WMP.

I think they're even on SP1. I'm not sure if the WMP is 8 or 9 but next time one passes my way I'm gonna check this stuff out.

Maybe more answers are to be had

well . . . yeah it does enable it to play through media player but you have to get one of the decoders mentioned earlier. I thought you were posting a workaround to spending the $10 for one of the DVD plugins I linked to earlier in the thread, which would've been nice but alas no.

but as far as enabling the play dvd though wmp in the auto play menu and such, that hack did indeed work. now if we can just find a free dvd decoding codec for wmp, we'd be in business

Not found a workaround to this yet, you do need some kind of DVD decoder installed before Windows MP will play DVD's. Another one of those things to stop Microsoft from having the monopoly on software (so I'm sure they will have found a way round it somewhere!)

Alternatively, if your video card has a DVD decoder built in, you can play DVDs with Medai player, from my understanding.
