Do I have sound?
Here is a call that came in today. The stories are true only the names have been changed to protect the innocent.
Tech: "Help Desk, how may I help you?"
User: "I have this Gateway Solo 450 laptop. The laptop has a sound card. How do I know that it makes sound?" (Note: Keep in mind the these laptops come with integrated sound and speakers.)
Tech: "When you turn on the computer and log into Windows do you get the logon music?"
User: "Oh, (realizing his question) I guess I do have sound. Thanks."
Interesting how they usually get off the phone after the light turns on in the attic.

Just like getting an URGENT trouble ticket cuz the computer won't boot, no lights or anything.....drive over to the remote location, reach down and plug it in...
Or the one thats on a switch box and when you switch to that computer the screen is black...yet again, another urgent matter. Walk over and turn it on....
Failure is not an option -- its a "feature" of Windows.
Mama never told me geekhood was gonna be like this....

Hey - I drove from Devon to Oxford (4 hours on a wet miserable crappy day) once to open a blind by a window that was casting a shadow on the "broken" monitor!! A whole days' work!

See now if the story about the having to press the power button isn't bad enough, we got a call that they wanted us to go down to Corpus/Laredo (can't remember which), to service a station that wouldn't turn on. My co-worker then called the site and walked them through pressing the power button on the side. The worst part about that is it goes through one layer of what's supposed to be competent phone techs before the calls get dispatched to us.
If you think your hate your life now, just think, it's obviously not over...
