general question about modem problems
I'm getting massive ping problems with alot of latency spikes on this new computer with WinXP i just bought even though i transferred the Lucent Win modem (that worked very well ping-wise on my old PC) to the new one.
Is it the computer itself that affects the ping or the modem? THe drivers are updated too btw.
any help is very much appreciated

Line noise and amount of traffic on the internet are more to blame. You may find that you coincidentally changed when msblast started raging round the internet.
If you do a tracert to www.yahoo.com and post your times here, you can be helped further.
Never, ever approach a computer saying or even thinking "I will just do this quickly."

AFter you have completed the tracert, right click on the screen, choose select all, it will turn white then hit enter - it is now in your clipboard. Post your message and press Ctrl+v to paste the contents of the clipboard into the post.
I suggest you tracert to yahoo.com as it allows pings, windrivers doesn't.

Geezer
This link explains fairly well
I usually run tracecert & ping to my isp's homepage too, though they might not allow it either , but you shouldn't get any 'outside' delay with these which can be insightfull ...
In answer to the original question,
Is it the computer itself that affects the ping or the modem?
It's all about 'lag', pretty much this depends where you live & how many 'hops' you do to anywhere ... it might be quite a hop to yahoo for instance over that to your isp, there's physically more cable literally by miles & their might be a lot more hops to any one place than another ...

This is showing a massive 869 ms at this point in the trace. This is nothing to do with you, but the servers and routers you are going through.
Try pinging your isp - see if the ping times are below 100ms.

Time to call your isp for suggestions then and the telco to check for line noise.

telco? line noise?
ive tried calling my isp , they dish out some BS about my area being "defective" or something. I live in the suburbs and everyone around me is on broadband or the same ISP as mine.
