Windows Installer Fails
On my XP laptop, I can download windows updates but most of the time they fail to install. Any link to help with this problem would be appreciated. Is there an easy way to reinstall the installer???? I have disabled ALL other programs as I thought they might be causing the problem - but no luck.

If your unlucky enough to have a dial-up connection (like me)...there's your problem.

When the install fails, do you get any kind of error message?
Have you tried without a virus scanner running?
have you looked at this troubleshooter?
Never, ever approach a computer saying or even thinking "I will just do this quickly."

New help for an old thread
A simple check might be: The windows installer sevice must be started or automatic and registered via sfc. Computer management>services>Windows Installer. Many installation or run glitches can be troubleshot by examining Services and Local security policies, some updates and security software patches change these services and/or the dependencies these services have.

This isn't like, a burnt copy of XP is it?

No, it is the original OEM that came with the laptop computer - it is only about a year old.

I manually started the installer to be sure it was running under services - still no luck.I checked the setup against another XP machine that has no problems and it seems to be identical. It really has me baffled.

have you checked the event viewer?
right click 'my computer' select 'manage' (or start->run "eventvwr" without the quotes)
under application and/or system are there any events refering to msiinstaller or something similar that correspond to the time of your failed updates?
you can copy the messages and paste the text into notepad or into a reply thread etc.
