Ok this could get very technical, but

You have to "partition" a drive (even if it is only one drive and you don't want to split it up). This creates the master boot record.... this is where the drive finds out which way is up.

Now if the partition table, or the boot record gets corrupt, the drive doesn't know where anything is and when windows tries to access it, it gets confused "messages" back from the drive, so windows says, ok, this is screwed, you wanna format?

Reasons for this corruption can be many fold, from a faulty hard drive to a virus or poorly written software.... its costs to have a post mortem done to find out what went wrong, so most people just trash it and start again.

Now you have your pictures off and presumably safe... get whatever other data you need off and then I would personally zero fill the drive (sometimes call a low or mid level format). This will wipe the drive completely and if it was a viral cause, the virus is not likely to survive. This is because the zero filler will over write every single data area, including the master boot record and partition information. You will then have to partition the drive and format it to start again. Since this is a slave and you have XP, this is simple for you.

Right click my computer, manage, look for storage and underneath you will see disk management. It will have both drives there, one will be formated, the other will be "unallocated space".

Right click on the unallocated space and allocate it, following the wizard.

Ok. Well I have seen the pictures but they are not safe. It was only a demo version. Have also used there other demo called Recover it all for windows and I can see that all of my data is there. Again unable to recover it due to demo version. Have you heard of this company before? http://www.winutils.net/demos.html. Anyway I have just paid for the programs with paypal and I guess I have to wait for an email or something.
Heres a quick question. If I just format my hard drive then can't I just use Pc Inspector to recover the files afterwards? Thanks again for your help.

ok to your last question, I wouldn't risk it

the more you do to the drive, the more likely you are to overwrite the data, pc inspector is free, why are you not trying that? It will copy the files for you

I am having no luck with that like I wrote previously. I will not recognise any data on the disc. "4. Tried Pc Inspector and it can find the drive but has no other information relating too it. Comes up with "bas parameter in bott sector: Bytes Per Sector (0) = 0!" This does relate to the hard drive I have problems with. "

Ok so you have to go with one that can see the data, which means money. However, the cost of the recovery programs is less than 10% of a full data recovery specialist. If you can get it back with a software program, think yourself lucky!!

    Hi all.

Well I have returned from Scotland and tried to recover all of my pictures. I now have them all safe and sound. I am currently trying another program from the same company called recover it all for windows and it has found all of my files and I am able to recover them all. Amazing. Just wondering why these programs are able to recover files when the ones recommended by several people here didn't work? Anyway not the point. My computer is also working great after the few problems I had after installing a new motherboard.

I would like to say thank you to all of you for your help. Excellent forum with very kind and helpful people. Thank you!!!!

P.S. They sent me a link in my email to download the full version but there was no codes to enter or anything. Does that mean that anyone can download these files without paying for it? If so whats your opinion about this forum leaders?

Who is they? If it's freeware, none whatsoever and can we have the link too?

If not, they may have just made a mistake?

Glad you are sorted, hope you had a decent time north of the wall, not too wet I hope.

They are winutils.net and its not freeware. I had to pay $49.00 but the link CAN be used by anyone. Could be an expensive mistake if you ask me. Don't think I want to post the link but I can send a PM to you if you wish. If too many people download it then they may stop it and I won't be able to get access again!!!

Scotland was great. Yes was wet but also alot of snow. More than here in Norway!!! Hope you had a great christmas too!
