combo card crahed my pc
My previous firewire card worked fine, but in an effort to expand my peripheral capacity (only two usb ports initially) without buying a new computer, I have tried two different USB/1394 combo cards; everytime I try to transfer video from my camera to the pc, the computer immediately reboots.
I wonder if I my motherboard won't support the combo, or if I need to update drivers, bios, etc. Any help would be much appreciated.

Welcome to windrivers glenn. I've sworn off mindreading for the rest of the month, so do you think you could help us out with a little more info? Make/model of computer, motherboard, usb card, camera, operating system, service pack, etc. Any yellow ! or ? in device manager?

I'll warn you now - compaqs and nec usb2 cards don't seem to live well together.
I would start off by installing the via chipset drivers: http://www.viaarena.com/default.aspx?PageID=2
Don't know if this is newer than what you've got, but here are the drivers for your camera: http://www.jvc.com/custrel/software_files/720.exe
Take a read of these as well:

The problem isn't in capturing video with the usb, it is with capturing video with the firewire component of the card. I don't seem to be having a problem with the USB ports on the card. Recardless of that fact, could the USB 2.0 still be "disagreeing" with my system? Should I configure it from USB 2.0 to 1.1? If so, how would I go about doing that.

If the usb ports are working, then I doubt they are disagreeing with your system. In any case, a 2.0 port can't be configured as 1.1.
There's not much that can be done for firewire, as the drivers are native to windows. Can you transfer video using usb2?
