    IDE2 not functioning

    Setup:
    k7vta3
    Athlon XP1700+
    256 DDR

Currently there are 2 drives on IDE1 and the computer functions normally. When I plug in a CDR drive into IDE2 computer doesn't start (power goes on monitor doesn't detect signal, hard drives don't load Windows).

Any thoughts? - wrong cable type? bad motherboard?

    Thanks!

Data cable fitted the wrong way 'round?

Is the CD drive known to work correctly, that is, OK in another system?

Will anything else work on IDE2, eg the second hard drive?

Try putting the IDE cable from IDE1 into IDE2 and set the bios to boot from it.
    Does it boot up correctly?

Do you have long cable plugged into the internal USB ports? If so that can mess up IDE functions. Had this happen to me a year ago. Tough to figure out because it makes no sense.

It's possible the motherboard is bad, but I think I'd be more inclined to think that you have a bad IDE2. I'd try what everyone else has suggested. The only other thing I can think of is maybe a bad powersupply, or a badly underpowered powersupply.

Are you certain that the CDR drive is strapped correctly?
Double check to make sure the jumper block is set for master or single drive. I prefer to manually set this rather than use cable select.

    And welcome to Windrivers
If it's true that wherever you go, there you are: how come so many people look lost?

    Both enabled in bios
