'Best of Breed' Spyware apps
Hi all!
I'm looking to solicit some input as to which Spyware cleaners work best, which ones should be avoided entirely, and what the pros & cons are to putting this stuff on your machine. I have read that some Spyware cleaners are, in fact, Spyware themselves. I was hoping to benefit from the collective of intellectual horsepower on this site, so feel free to give your input on this topic.
Thanks!
Mike

Intel Mod
Reddragon's post does resurrect a year old topic, but still a current one, unfortunately.
It's worth mentioning that Spystopper is a legitimate clone of SpyBlocker. The two offer a different balance of features and value, SpyBlocker may be helpful to some folk in having a dedicated support forum:

Anyone considering trying anti-spyware packages would be well served to check out SpywareWarrior's rogue anti-spyware list.

If the automobile had followed the same development cycle as the computer, a Rolls-Royce would today cost $100, get a million miles per gallon, and explode once a year, killing everyone inside.

Use a good hosts file to start with and you won't have to deal with cleaning all the junk from your machine. In over a year the worst thing I've had to remove is a tracking cookie.
A good hosts file works. The best out there is here.

Highly recommended.

X-Cleaner Free actually finds stuff that many others dont...it also cleans up temp files while it scans for spyware and trojans. limited in activated features (there is a paid version) but does find and remove spyware and malware. worth a shot, i use it.

My .02...one thing you'll often notice is that no matter what tools you're using, it pays to run scheduled scans using two or more anti-spyware apps. consecutively.
Seems that in the rare cases when I find spyware [even firewalled and behind a router] one application may find it, the other won't.
I've actually run Lavasoft, spybot and the MS antispyware programs, and each found an entry that the others didn't. [even with updates current just prior to scanning.]
