Because on ATX PSU's they are the switch wires to start the PSU up.

One thing to check is to make sure that the CPU fan is plugged into the correct fan connector on the MB. I did that with an Intel D815EEAL board recently with the same results. I connected to the correct plug, and it booted.

Apparently, the board won't power up without a CPU fan turning.

    Hope this helps!

Here comes the revolution; time for the retribution.

    a. make sure the only things connected are the the PSU, CPU and fan (to the CPU fan socket), PC speaker, Power Switch.
    ..
    I alreaady suggested that - it didn't work ..

RMA means retun it to your dealer and get a new one..

how long does it take to fry some electronic components? certainly less than 5 secs!

Depending on the hit, many components can be instantly fried by turning on a system with something shorting or otherwise mis-connected.

Thanks everyone for all the help! It turned out that the mobo was fried, I got a new one, and everything worked fine.

    Thanks again!
