Basically, you cannot remove Win XP, any version. You have to replace it with something else, like Win2000, or Linux.

If you are downgrading to Win2000, then you have to format the PC and install Win2000 fresh.

If you want to upgrade to WinXP Pro, you can do that straightaway without formatting, although a clean install is still the most trouble-free.

The most important thing to remember is drivers, drivers, drivers. You have to make sure you have the drivers for the operating system that you intend to replace Win XP Home with, or else, you will have problems.

If you know the model of your motherboard and the peripherals installed with it, you can check the Internet and download the drivers and store them in your other PC, or better yet, burn them to CD, before actually formatting.

You can also download this program to get complete information about your system.

    I don't know, and I don't care.

You're absolutely right, GrandDad. I overlooked that fact. I just did not understand why someone would have two versions of XP in one PC, but I think I understand what may have happened. Thanks for pointing that out.

As GrandDad pointed out, how did you end up with two XP's? Did you upgrade your Win XP Home to Pro? Or did you install in two different partitions?
    I don't know, and I don't care.

If you have performed a parallel install either by changing the directory that windows installs to, or putting it on another partition then all you have to do is remove the windows installation you don't want by using explorer and deleting the appropriate windows directory. You need to be logged in as Administrator to do this.

Having done that, you need to edit the boot.ini file - that is easily done from the startup properties (Right click my computer, properties, advanced, startup and recovery button, edit)

Remove the line from the bootloader that refers to the installation you just deleted.

Lastly ensure the correct default installation of windows is selected on the startup properties.
Never, ever approach a computer saying or even thinking "I will just do this quickly."
