    Angry No dial tone

    Hi Guys,
Anyone out there able to give me ideas as to when I am trying to connect a friends computer to the net I can get nothing but the message "No dial tone"? I have unchecked "wait for Dial Tone before connecting", the modem is connected to the main telecom plug (not a spur). It dials up but there is no transfer sounds and then I get the message "No Dial Tone"!. This person has their number witheld (x-directory)does not have call waiting, and is with BT.HELP...
Is there a code I have to enter in the Modem string because they withold their number?

had the same problem a while ago. what isp are using, Btinternet? make sure the software is installed correctly, also in system/device manager make sure that you have a network adapter installed called Dial-up adapter. I know this is basic but sometimes we forget..

    Some ideas to try:
Has the modem got 2 sockets? .... cable may be in phone jack, not line jack.
Is it the right cable? If you've changed modems, be aware that there are 2 different wiring layouts for modem cables, straight and cross wired, look at the modem end, one type has two contacts connected, the other all four.
Have you tried the modem in another computer? Or tried a different cable?
BTW, I've made ALL these dumb mistakes at one time or another
I think I know just enough to know how much I don't know... I think...

Also try installing some more Com ports and try them,
Or take modem out uninstall and try from scratch.
    Is the phone line good
    is the wall jack good
is your modem using the same irq as the mouse or another piece of hardware.
Best bet would be check the Com's and Irq's
if you have a hardware Modem check your Bios Settings.
I hope that someday we will be able to put away our fears and prejudices and just laugh at people.
