Aopen AK73 pro and Win2K
My latest project is this Windows 2000 system. It seems to crash intermittently for no apparent reason. And when I say crash I mean it just locks up. The only way to shut it dow is to hold in the power for 5 seconds. The worst part is I was in the middle of adding a component to Win2000 when it crashed and as a result Win2K is unrecoverable and even unrepairable. The System.sav file is corrupt and I had to reinstall. Still crashes. I checked the RAM on a simmtester but it passed. I installed all the boards drivers and updated the bios. Any other ideas?

Heat. Are all the fans working OK and can you monitor the CPU temp?
And don't post the same question in multiple places, you'll get your hand smacked
There's no panic like the panic you momentarily feel when you've got
your hand or head stuck in something

Well, it has two fans one on the case one on the CPU both running fine. I noticed some heat by the video card so I moved the sound card over a slot to allow more air movement and I left the case open.
I don't have a temp probe. I should get one of those. But, I dont think that's the issue. Although that was one of my earlier thoughts. Especially when it seemed to crash after a certain amount of time and then crash gain shortly after reboot. But then I let it cool down, and it did it again.

also, some video cards with incorrect drivers have been known to do this. One springing to mind is the ATI Radeon 7000 (the one that ATI didn't build - Powered By I think they are known as, 2k installs default drivers that dont work..)
But if you can supply more information, it will make it easier to help you.
All sorts of wonderful things in life.

The AK73 pro is a via chipset - so you want to go to www.viaarena.com and get the via 4 in 1 drivers. You would be best off with the older version (4.43 I think) shown near the bottom of the download page.
Power supply can cause these problems - do you have a spare to swap out? The other thing to look for is bulging capacitors on the motherboard... it only takes one and you will get this type of thing.
motherboard specs etc at aopen

Never, ever approach a computer saying or even thinking "I will just do this quickly."
