My job just went from great to crappy!

I work as a technician for a computer OEM (not a retail system). The best thing about the job is my Boss. He is the type of guy that would always defend you to the customer and make sure that you were treated with respect by everyone. The department was set up so that each tech was in charge and had the ability to do whatever needed to be done. It is great not to be micromanaged, or have a script to work from.

The problem is that my boss has too much on his plate. Today we found out that they are splitting up his job, and they are going to bring in a new manager for the techs. He does not have tech experiance, just time as a call center and tech bench manager. He is looking to come in and "tighten up our processes". Yipee, here comes five pages of protocol on how to replace a hard drive. I guess it is time to get the resume out again.

Failure is not an option -- its a "feature" of Windows.

I love when companies do that instead of asking the people doing the work how it could get done more efficiently. Good luck!

This is the typical corporate modern mind set that I talk about though. Best way to deal with it is to set your expectations ahead of time -- that it will happen -- and then it won't be as bad when it does. One of the problems is that we live in this era where the thinking is "lets see how we can save some money" rather than "lets see how we can make some money". Downsize, split up, merge, outsource, etc,... all these key words you hear everywhere you go. There's a keyword for everything these days. There's little room for settling in and getting comfy in a job anymore. Micro-manage: It's how they "get things done" these days. The only way around it is to be the boss,... and get used to it, because it's not going to change for a long time. "Trust" is something that was lost when the "dot com bubble" burst. Now we all pay the price by being micro-managed. It's progressively getting worse as jobs become more scarce in this country and people want to defend what little they have.

I wish you nothing but the best with your new boss. With any luck,.. you'll do just fine.
