DVD rom reading very slow
I have a Toshiba SD-M1712 16X reader, actually two in seperate systems. Running WinXP Pro, SP2, viewing contents via Windows Explorer. When I place a backed up DVD(PINE 4X), written using my Plextor PX-708A, it takes 20 or 30 seconds to read. Take the same DVD to my second machine running Win2K, it's read and contents displayed almost immediately in Windows Explorer.
Only two things I can think of. One, I am running Sp2, but it has not affected anything else so I am doubtful it is the problem. I also recently installed Nero Burning ROM version 6.3.
Anyone else experience something similar and have a suggestion.
My apologies, could an admin move this to its proper location under CD/DVD

Well I dunno about suggestions, but this isn't at all unusual with burnt discs, be glad it can read them at all by the sounds of it - burnt disks just aren't ever as good as pressed (commercially produced) disks, be they CD or DVD & this comes from the 'wavering' of the laser during burning, move the disks between machines &/or units & you increase the potential 'wavering' (the error between where it should have recorded & where it did)..
Of course here besides seperate units you've also got seperate software, but for 20 seconds, I dunno if its really worth investigating ? If we are to (investigate that is) confirm what reads & writes in what machine & with which o/s please, & check dma status on both & tell us about any autorun settings too ..(that should be enough to get going with!)

You could have just deleted your own post if I'd not replied & cut & pasted it to a new post in the right section, so now if you want something moved press 'report post' (I just did , for you ..) & that sends a message to Scott the boards 'owner' & NooNoo the site admin, either of which can then move it

No problem - moved.
Never, ever approach a computer saying or even thinking "I will just do this quickly."

After some hard thinking, the only program I installed was Nero 6. The drive now can only read at 6X. I have uninstalled Nero, and will try reinstalling my other burning app which also uses the Aspi layer to see if it can undo whatever Nero may have done.

Try Hooked on Phonics. I understand you can read 300% faster with it.
