HP Pavillion 8240
Is the motherboard upgradeable, or what is the maximum processesor the stock motherboard will support? It is currently running the Pentium 233.

Usually ASUS motherboards (and yours does look like made by ASUS) can support AMD K6-2 CPUs (400 or even 500), but that involves BIOS upgrading/editing and seach for undocumented settings for voltage regulator. You need to set 2,2V which may be not listed in the manual, and 2x multiplier which works as 6x for AMD K6-2 CPUs.
Bit more info: http://www4.tomshardware.com/howto/2...5/t2p4-01.html
But you have another motherboard, though... If you have spare K6-2-400 CPU laying around and willing to risk, you can try...
Or you can find another used ATX motherboard with CPU what can fit in your HP case...
