Explorer! error box while opening my computer

    Hey Gang,

Anyone ever see this and know what causes it?? I have a Windows XP OS on an Emachine that is generating a small error box that simply has the word "Explorer" in it with the only option being "ok". It seems to pop up anytime I open system icons like My Computer or Control Panel.

    Any ideas????

    Thanks in advance!!

Sounds quite like a virus to me. I would run an online virus scan at:

    http://housecall.antivirus.com

to find out what you are dealing with. There are a number of virus files that affect executable system files of that type, designed to keep you from helping yourself.

First off, a Windows machine can LIE. If you ran the scan internally, then it is unreliable for this particular instance. Did you do the online scan?

If so, then the System File Checker is your next step, I guess.

    sfc /scannow

Have you tried repairing IE (using the ADD/Remove Programs) or updating it?

I ran the scans online. I just concluded an AVS scan also saying that it is clean. SFC is a good idea....................thanks

SFC found nothing and the problem persist. I was not able to run the IE Repair because it is not listed in the ADD/REMOVE area.

    Any other ideas??

Thanks for all the help guys!!

Ultimately, upgrading the XP Service Pack 2 caused these little bug to go away. I still don't know for sure what caused it to begin with.

    The important thing: ITS GONE!!
