    Athlon 64 and XP SP2

Has anyone else encountered problems applying SP2 to Athlon 64 machines?

Clean installs of XP with SP2 slipstreamed seem to work OK.

Upgrades to SP2 seem a little iffy.

Yes, I recently bought a new Athlon 64 3500+ (Newcastle), 2x512M sticks of Crucial value select PC3200 DRAM, and an Asus AV8 motherboard.

I've been able to install XP Pro a couple of times, but every time I tried to run the SP2 install I would get random "File is corrupt" errors, and the occasional bluescreen.

The Windows Update website would lock up Internet Explorer, and at times I could not even copy the SP2 install to the troubled computer over the network.

Going to try a slipstreamed SP2 install tonight.

I tried a slipstream install of SP2, but it still crashed 3 times during the install.

So in an act of desperation, I moved my RAM from slots 3,4 to slots 1 & 2, and I havn't had a single crash since.. Played HL2, Doom 3, and ran 3DMark 01,03, and 05 with no problems.
Also ran Prime95 overnight without any crashes or instability.

I had ruled out bad RAM initially, because Memtest86 didn't show any errors after 3 iterations through it's tests. I guess it must have been something Windows didn't like with the VIA drivers.. or something

    For those wondering:
    3DMark 2001: 22601
    3DMark 2003: 11768
    3DMark 2005: 4743

    So far, so good.

Hey There, I listed an article below here you may be interested in. I'm not sure if this is your problem or not. Hopefully this will shed some light on the problem.

MICROSOFT HAS ISSUED a Knowledge Base article which says that if you install Windows XP SP2 on a machine with an AMD 64-bit chip your computer may repeatedly re-start.
