Network/Router problem

Hi there,

I recently had a power outage at home and now 3 of the computers cant connect to the router for internet access.. I brought a new router and still only one computer go online. I have 2 - XP and 1 - windows 98.

On my local area connection it says 'this problem occurred because the network did not assign a network address to the computer.' I am using Rogers high speed for internet and my router is Dynex DX-ESW5.

I deleted my network card and reinstalled it. I have both wireless and ethernet.

I would appreciate any help !!

Have you gone into the new router to be sure it is set to use DHCP?
Have you tested each computer to see if its being assigned an address?
like 192.168.xxx.xxx

I dont know how to do that, DHCP?

I just downloaded everest and it shows

dhcp 255.255.255.255

That is a 5 port network switch, not actually a router

and that means it cannot assign ips. You will have to assign ips manually, but this still may not allow the internet to be shared.

How about a display setting question???

I only get 16 bit and 32 bit color.. Website display are small there is room for a larger display, I cant change the resolution..

16 and 32 bit does not make things bigger or smaller
Thats done by changing the display to 640X480
instead of 1024X768

For the XP machine(s), if you want larger, clearer type:

In IE6, Tools, Internet Options, Accessibility, check boxes 'ignore font styles specified on web pages' and 'ignore font sizes specified on web pages', then click 'OK'.

Then, click 'Fonts', select 'Latin Based' and pick 'Sylfaen' if you have it, then click 'OK', then 'OK' again.

Then, still in IE6, click 'View' and then 'Text Size' and pick 'Larger'.

I also recommend you use Clear Type ( http://www.microsoft.com/typography/...ner/Step1.aspx )

You will occassionaly hit a web page that has been set up for teen agers with great eyesight that you will have to reset (uncheck) the 'ignore font size' to properly read, but reverting is simply a matter of re-checking the box.

Or if you just want your internet pages to be bigger just hold the control key down and run your scroll on your mouse one way or the other and see what happens. If you have a scroll that is.

I'm hesitant to say that your old router is not working to begin with, since it allowed at least one computer on the internet.

I would take a guess that the old router has lost it's settings and 2 of the 3 computers might have static IPs versus dynamic IPs. I would make all computer setup for dynamic IPs and DNS if they are not already. At the very least verify that all computers are setup for DHCP.
