I've tried removing Realtek and rebooting and allowing the computer to detect it and it doesn't make a difference. Please, would someone lend a girl a hand?

I originally got XP home version with the computer, but the disk met a horrible end and I loaded XP Professional version. Could the drivers have just been for the home version? I dont think so.. but hey.. ya never know...

    Welcome to wd forums Andrea.

At the risk of stating the obvious .. You've checked cabling (coincidences occur), turned any power switches on & made sure that the volume levels are up (does the volume icon {the little speaker} show or not btw?)

& in answer to your question :- No they'd be the same in both versions of the same age, but different aged versions might have different drivers & they might also need either additional or newer drivers depending on what got installed originally (this is pretty probable infact)..

Sooo ... can you tell us anymore than ? :-
I ordered this computer from AOL, Its a Systemax.
We need to identify the chipset (your motherboard details, as some types need patches) & exact audio h/w codec (your onboard soundcard chip type) Realtek AC'97 means its one of several possible ones..

Some meaningless numbers perhaps which might give us a model or such, on the back of the pc maybe ? Then we can check specifications .. or you can try running a utility like everest home to find out exact details of the pc's 'inards', post the full report please, minus any serials , (or just chipset & audio ).

& have you applied any service packs to windows or not ?

You need to down load driver for card.I had any issue and where my sound Claude woodcut all when I would reboot it was working and then images come off again. Once I downloaded the drive on that came with the sound card all was fixed.I never did understand why when I installed Windows XP professional service pack 2 that the sound was even working in the beginning. But is time went on the problem got worse and worse until I installed my factory driver. This sound card is the one that the Speaker wire is connected to. You should have got some type of utility driver with the computer and a build sheet that would identify all internal parts. If not try to find the support site for whom you bought it from. Good luck John R.

Duh..I did not watch my point n speak to closely that time.If you have onboard sound, meaning if speaker wire plugs in next to lan-usb-mouse-ports and not down in a pci card you need driver for motherboard.

Think you can open the case and look for a make or model number silk screened on the motherboard?

& your dad is right (as one myself I have to comment that they generally are ) .. that's what an 'ac97 codec' usually is (though you can get these chips on add in sound cards) ... the info you've given me/us so far tells me/us about 1/2 of your motherboard details :-
    ..Mini-Tower mATX Chassis w/250W PS SIS651 Motherboard ..
so that's its 'northbridge' sussed out ( the chipset concerned with agp & such for onboards) what we want to know about is its 'southbridge' which controls the sound - run the everest utility I linked to earlier, to avoid having to open the case ..

Try logging on to Microsoft Windows update. It should determine which driver your computer needs. It's worked for me before. Can`t hurt at this point anyhow .

I have a driver in there. However, it wont work. Speakers were tested as well as motherboard. Motherboard is just fine as are the speakers. The driver must be the problem. What the motherboard says is:
    UL6P44301498 PC 6510(COULD BE O TOO, DONT KNOW)-G-6L
