Post HP Jetdirect woes... Help Needed

Okay I have a HP Laserjet 4000 printer with a Jetdirect 600n(J3110A) card in it. It is on a Novell/Windows 98 network. A few times a day the jetdirect card resets itself for some unknow reason and the printer must be cycled for it to work again. My supervisior suggested a firmware update may be needed. I got on HPs web site and found a firmware update for the card and went to install it and it said "HP Download Manager must be installed before you can install this software." Fair enough, I download the Manager and went to install it again, and again it said "HP Download Manager must be installed before you can install this software." WHAT?!?! It is installed!! Fine, I'll go into Download Manager itself and it will build a firmware database from the internet. This time I was told that there are no firmware updates for the card. Then the Firmware file for this card I downloaded is imaginary huh?!?! IF anyone has ever done this please help. Also, could anyone post the HP customer support line/Email address? I cannot find it on their site ether. Shesh....what crummy support.

    I'll tackle your last request first. HP's ?<a href="http://welcome.hp.com/country/us/eng/contact_us.htm" target="_blank">support e-mail</a> here.

As to the "download manager." I had a similar problem...simply rebooted after installing. May not be your problem, but did you try that yet

    Here are the phone numbers:
    <a href="http://whp-cnav.extweb.hp.com/sdcnav/jsp/sdcnav.jsp?cc=US&sniContext=all&sniContextTitle=al l&rg=NAM&svcCod=csc&cc=US" target="_blank">http://whp-cnav.extweb.hp.com/sdcnav/jsp/sdcnav.jsp?cc=US&sniContext=all&sniContextTitle=al l&rg=NAM&svcCod=csc&cc=US</a>

Before you go any further, though, try printing a report from the printer's menu. On our 5000N, we get a list of the last three errors. Those error codes might help you track down your problem.

The fact that the printer is "timing out" and you have a Netware 5 network kind of sounds like a DHCP issue. Did you try browsing the Novell Knowledgebase? <a href="http://support.novell.com/search/kb_index.jsp" target="_blank">http://support.novell.com/search/kb_index.jsp</a>

Thanks for your help guys. HP tech support came through for me and said I had downloaded the wrong firmware, they pointed me a URL that has just the firmware, not a install program for it. After downloading it and placing it in the right directory, I was able to update the Jetdirect card. I'm posting the URL in case anyone else needs it.

It Len, I did try rebooting but no dice, Download Manager still "wasn't installed".

Macgyver, thanks for the Novell info, I will check it out to see if that was the cause.
