Download everest at majorgeeks and checkout exact model for your soundcard and download drivers for it.
Remove soundcard referance from device manager (uninstall drivers). Turn off PC, remove soundcard and reboot. Turn off once more and put that soundcard back in. Boot and install drivers by pointing to file ya just downloaded whn asks for it. Checkout SoundMax Mixer and enable 6.1 surround feature if there..

Or perhaps your speaker setup ?
Open up device manager & double click "sounds & audio devices" - you ought to get a page a bit like this :-
Click the advanced button at the bottom under 'speaker setup' & tell it you've got more than stereo ! (two speakers being the default setup & its made like this on purpose to give you the 'best sound' as decoding to more than two channels may give performance issues)

...
i downlaoded everest an it told me my audio driver is:
Field Value
Audio Adapter Intel 82801EB ICH5 - AC'97 Audio Controller [A-2/A-3]
which pointed me to this site :
http://support.intel.com/support/chi.../CS-009244.htm
...now where is the driver to download on that page?
<edit>
i went to the fujitsu siemens download page for my mainboard and eventually found this driver : the only sound driver for my mainboard:

..yet when i was running XP PRo edition, my sound was working properly for a while, then it stopped working after i re-installed XP PRO...
i have since forgotten about the problem and purchased XP MCE...
so the probability of the driver not being compatible with XP MCE has been eliminated, because i had the same problem on XP PRO.. {if u understand where im getting at )

Geezer
What are you doing loose on the intel site ?
..Due to the variety of different AC'97 codecs that are available, Intel does not offer AC'97 reference audio drivers for public download. Please refer to the system or motherboard manufacturer for any driver downloads or updates..
Mutters muchly about 'stupid' .asp generated pages which prevent linking ! Grrrr ...
Go here @ MSI & put "d 1625" into the driver search box & follow the prompts .. there appears to be two different drivers for that series of motherboards, but only one applicable for your model - which ought to be labelled as "Audio (Onboard) [AC97 - AD1985 + ICH5] "/ "Audio Driver Onboard AD198X "..

I have the exact same problem (I think), but I can't find the ac97 driver you mention. When I search, I only see the AD198X driver that gives me the "Driver Error 01".
I have a 1627, but neither 1627 nor 1625 will make me see the driver I want. I suppose I miss something obvious...
