No icons since reboot
Since I last restarted, almost all exe files on my PC no longer show their icons, I get the generic application icon on all of them instead. How can I fix this?
Thanks

First do a spyware and virus check and then if that doesnt work use a restore point and go back to a previous working date.

I have no viruses and checked with many scanners, it did found spyware but cleaned it.
The full story is I installed a new DVDRW, but I had the jumper set wrong and and it hung the windows startup when i booted, I then figured it must be the jumper so I checked it, corrected the problem and then it booted fine, it's since I booted with the jumper in the wrong position that this started.
3finger: you're finally on my "ignore" list so I won't see your posts anymore, so you can stop bothering to post useless messages to make me look like an idiot.

I forgot to mention my shortcuts are slowly starting to return to their proper icon on the desktop, isn't there a way to force a refresh of the exe icons? If I move an exe to my pocket pc the icon appears fine, It seems like the jumper problem might have caused it to hang while it updates the icons or something and left that process unfinished.

Try Tweakui
To repair Icons try tweakui a powertoy for XP from Microsoft
Tweakui download site
downloadad tweakui.exe, after you install it, click on repair, rebuild icons, and then click repair now. It has helped me out a lot in the past.

I by no means was posting a "useless message to make you look like an idiot."
You have had many problems with your pc over the last year or so including spyware, crashes, data loss, etc., and we have all offered many suggestions and tried to be as helpful as possible. I am not the only one who has suggested that you have your PC looked at professionally, and was suggesting that seriously, not as an insult. If you use this pc to put out your software, I think you would be willing to pay somebody to fix it properly so that you are not risking losing important data or "infecting" any of your clients with cd's produced by a computer that has spyware, etc. on it.
If I have offended you, I apologize. I am only trying to steer you in the right direction, which in this case seems to be that it may be time to have your pc looked at professionally.

delete the shellIconCache and let it rebuild on the next boot.
