Windows XP, two IPs on a single NIC

I have a Windows XP machine that has two IPs, one private and one public, but just a single NIC. I've done this using regedit, not from TCP/IP configuration window (doesn't work for some reason, forgets the secondary IP instantly). Windows however seems to lose the secondary and private IP. It just disappears after a while, but not immediately like when using the configuration window. What should I do so that Windows would not lose this secondary IP?

I do it from the TCP/IP configuration window. It will only work if you set the IP's to be static. Unless your ISP offers you a static IP (very uncommon for home users), your IP must be set to dynamic, which in turn prevents you from having multiple IP's. Now what is the point of having a public and a private IP on the same adapter??? It would only make sense with 2 private IP's...
Note that you are trying to use a hack, which may or may not work.. officially this is not supported.

One for home network, one for internet access. I had it set up so that the PCs had only private IPs, but my low-end ADSL router performs quite badly in NAT mode (just few simultaneous connections would knock it on its knees).

Then maybe do a firmware update for the router... or get a different one. You may find some on sale for $5-10 after rebates.

You want two NIC's then ! - TCP/IP can only deal with one 'active IP' at a time anyway, so if you 'share' (allowing for you getting it working) then you can only use one at once regardless & I somehow think that's not quite the point ..
