    regedit

When I try to run regedit it says I performed an illegal operation. I click on detail and it says the program tried to execute an invalid instruction. I'm running win 98. Please help.

I did a scan from commandondemand.com and it found a virus w32/sillyworm.gk.exe. I don't have an antivirus program. I tried to run a scan from trend micro but the scan keeps freezing up.

    Trend

I haven't had much luck with trend's free scan over the last few months. Symantec offers one have you tried there? Chris

    Bitdefender also offers one.

Get to another 98 PC and copy regedit.exe to floppy and name it regedit.com.

    Launch via a:\regedit.com

Good idea to also copy over some other files like cmd.exe -> renamed to cmd.com.

The idea is that an attack is redirecting to a malware file or has already renamed your valid files something else and has replaced your valid file, than renaming to *.com files will help avoid that and still make it executable.

    Good luck.

That is very poor practise on the internet.
    and irresponsible
You are the very reason viruses proliferate

Although this is a low risk virus I suspect you cant use the trend micro because you have other infections
    You can try

If I go into ms-dos prompt and type in regedit I can get into the registry. I can't get in if I try to run regedit. The reason I don't run an antivirus program is my computer runs very slow. I have a dell L500r.

Look it doesnt matter what your reason is.
If you read what I posted on that virus, it sends itself to all the poeple in the aim list and it also infects any other drives that are opened so any floppy thats in there is infected.
So soon as your online it begins infecting others i expect.

I think if you read back you will see i posted a fix.
    a few times.
Putting you down no i think not.
Surfing the net with no antivirus is just irresponsible thats all.
Were trying to cut down the number of virus infections not proliferate it.

Rock and a hard place...The reason your computer is running slow is probably because it's infected with a slew of viruses.
My suggestion? Get some type of anti-virus program and run it from Safe Mode.
Out of curiosity, if you go to Run > msconfig > Startup are there a bunch of weird no names like wijlmxn.exe? Not specically a file by that name, but along the same alphabet soup genre....

Well, you're running regedit now, even if it's just via command prompt.

You've never indicated if the other online virus scans have been any help, so we're pretty much waiting on you on this one.

What antivirus software have you tried on that machine.

I ran full scan with micro trend and found no virus. I I updated the definitions and everything was clean. I could not run micro's free online scan and also had trouble with mcafee online scan. I also bought webroot spy sweeper. That removed a few spywares. I still have the problem with running regedit from the run command.
