[Resolved] Windows Update - Windows Installer 3.1 fails to install - Access denied
Apparently this is a common problem;
I performed a repair install of Windows XP Pro OEM with sp2 & when I go to Windows Update it wants to install the Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1. The update fails & requires a re-boot. I downloaded the redistribution copy of Installer 3.1 & installed & it fails towards the end saying “access denied”

Windows Installer changes your registry as you add or remove programs. Thus, it is a sensitive and generally protected Windows resource.
It is possible that you could seriously damage not only your registry BUT you OS if you persist in this so I suggest you back up the registry before doing any more.
There are others here much brighter than me in this issue BUT I caution you to go carefully.

I backed up the Registry & created a Restore Point.
Logging in as Administrator didn't have any effect either, install still fails. Redistribution (KB893803) fails with "Access Denied" error & un-installs.
Installation Failure Error Code is; 0x80070005

I was able to score a free support call from M$ I spoke with a nice young lady (Liji) in New Delhi, India, who had me reset security Settings back to defaults, Article ID: 313222
This fixed my issue. I was able to install the redistribution Windows Installer 3.1 & all High Priority, Software & Hardware updates after re-setting the security settings.

I do appreciate your posts. the link you provided was in the right general direction, I was just happy to get M$'s hand-holding on the phone I was in no mood to manually edit the Registry, that's for sure!
I appreciate the blessings as well, every little bit helps
