Blue Screen of Death after running windows update
Greetings all,
I ran Windows update on my mom's laptop, Win2k Pro, Service Pack 4, and now the thing won't boot up.
Actually, it boots up to the desktop, but then it's a strange blue screen of death, and then it immediately reboots itself. If left to do it's thing, it would continue this process over and over again.
Right when the wallpaper comes up, but before Windows Explorer (taskbar, desktop icons, etc), that's when the blue screen of death appears. Because the system reboots itself, I can't read what's on the blue screen.
There were about 20 updates, all of them security updates, I think.
Is there a way I can go back to the previous system state?
I tried F8 during boot up and I can boot into Safe Mode, but I don't know what to do to fix the system.
I tried the "last known good config" option but this didn't work either, same result: just after the desktop wallpaper appears, blue screen and auto-reboot.
Does anyone know what I can do to get the system back like it was? I mean, short of a complete re-install?
Any tips and help would be appreciated.

You need to turn off auto restart as well as soon as you can. Did you see any of the BSOD details?

Have that problem sometimes here too. Love those updates. We have to go in a run a chkdsk on the drive to get it to boot up right. Hope that helps you. Kennel
Just when you thought it was safe to go back into the water.

Quoting NooNoo: "ok first thing to do is turn off auto restart - right click my computer, properties, advanced, startup and shutdown button and uncheck the box... next time it will blue screen properly, make a note of the exact message."

Hawk, per kennel's post, try Check Disk. Boot from your XP CD, choose the "r" option to run the recovery console and follow the on-screen log-in instructions. Once your in the console command prompt type "chkdsk /r" press enter and wait for the program to finish. Typing "exit" will exit the console and re-boot. Personally, I'd try that before any repair utilities run from within Windows.
