Looking for Siemens SpeedStream SS6101 cable modem driver
Having trouble finding drivers for Siemens SpeedStream SS6101 cable modem. Tried looking at the Siemens web site as well as driversguide.com with no luck. Been using altavista.com to search the web for it with no luck as well. Trying to help a friend get cable connected and he had this cable modem so I said we could try and find the drivers online before going out and purchasing a new modem. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.
Thanks....

Installed the drivers and then when I turned the modem on all the lights came on (Power, Send, Receive, Sync, Ready, USB) but then the only ones that stayed lit were Power - steady green light, USB - flashing green light, Receive - flashing green light. The Send, Sync and Ready lights do not stay lit or flash after that.
I tried pinging www.yahoo.com and www.cox.net and got the message "Ping request could not find host." When I look at Control Panel/My Connections and check the status of the connection it shows as being connected, duration of the connection and speed of 10.0Mbps. It shows that some bytes are being received (20,000 or so when I looked) but none are being sent whereas on my computer it is in the millions for received and sent. When I open IE I get page not found. IE connection is set to never dial a connection. This is how we have it hooked up physically. Cable splitter splits cable - one to his cable modem one to another splitter which splits it to my cable modem and my cable TV receiver. My cable TV and cable internet connections work fine. I'm thinking at this point that it is possibly a bad cable modem but will post the configuration in case someone sees a problem with the settings.

Who are you sharing the cable with? If you already have one modem working, just get a router to share the internet.

Router...
That's what Cox told him today when he called. I have a D-Link DI-514 802.11b Wireless Router sitting here in a box that was given to me. Won't his comp need a wireless card or something... ...It says on the box that a wireless adapter is needed but it also says that I can use it to share an Internet connection with wired or wireless computers. It's got four lan ports and one wan port and the detachable antenna. Does the wan port connect the modem to the router and then the lan ports are used to connect up to four computers via ethernet cables?????? His ethernet card has a problem so if that is how it is connected we will need to get one. and a long ethernet cable... ...any body know anything about these routers. or wireless adapter? I will see if I can find a users manual on-line. I do have the CD which may have a users manual on it.

Yes you could connect with a wireless card.

Or connect with a standard ethernet card.

Yes that is exactly how to connect it.

Wired ethernet cards are dirt cheap

or go wireless, they are not that much more than a standard wired card and of course you don't have the cost of buying a long ethernet cable.

We can help you out here but you will find these set up quite easily and the manuals are usually helpful if you need to do things outside the setup wizard.

Thanks...
I got myself connected via the Router without needing to install any software. I then installed the software per the Quick Installation Guide and could no longer browse. I reset the Router to Factory Default Specifications via sticking a paper clip in the Reset Pinhole on the back panel. I then recycled the power on the Router, Cable Modem and Computer. And poof... ...browsing again. Download speeds increased from 5-5.5 Mbps to 7-7.5 Mbps. Upload speeds remained about the same at 550 Kbps. I found links to Quick Installation Guides, Configuration Steps and Firmware Upgrades as well as answers to FAQ's at D-Links web page at:
http://support.dlink.com/products/view.asp?productid=DI%2D514
Their home page is at http://dlink.com
My first try at the Firmware Upgrade failed - Reason: Downloaded file not Firmware file. I tried again without downloading a new file and this time it worked. Upgrade from Firmware Version 1.02 to 1.03. I don't know what that will do for me. The updates to the Firmware state:
¤ Added WPA and WPA-PSK support
¤ Added Radio ON / OFF option on Wireless Page
¤ Modified the Time page - Adding Local Computer Time Option
Now to get the other computer to connect through the Router to the Internet via a Wireless Adapter. Checking the prices at Fry's Electronics on-line they range from $9.99 - $119.99. Fry's on-line store is at http://outpost.com . The list of Wireless Adapters for Desktops starts here http://shop4.outpost.com/search?search_type=regular&query_string=wireless+a dapters&sort=price&order_by=p03a&search_type=regul ar&order=asc&resultpage=0&from=0&to=24 . The question is which one to get??? The ones I read about were all 802.11b compatible. Do I get the USR 5416 Wireless-G 125Mbps
for $ 9.99??? U.S. Robotics have been around for a long time right? Or do I spring $119.99 for the D-Link Xtreme N™ Desktop Adapter (DWA-552) or somewhere in the middle. What is the best bang for the buck, taking stability as a major factor?
Thanks for the help!

Since you have an 802.11b standard router, you should get a matching card, however, for upgrade purposes, you want one that is capable of connecting to both b and g networks. $119 is a little excessive... the USR at 10 bux sounds more like it... however there are other considerations - such as signal strength and radio interference from cordless phones, microwaves, tv senders and a myriad of other things that muck up the signal.. This really can be trial and error... so I suggest you open the packaging very carefully and hang on to it until you are sure you got it working right.

He's off to Wal-Mart...
...as it is closer than Fry's. I told him to get one that is at least 802.11b compatable but should try to get one that is 802.11g compatable as well to keep up with technology "somewhat" for another day or two.

Connected...
He got a Belkin High-Speed 802.11g Wireless PCI Adapter-up to 125Mbps using High-Speed for $50.00 plus tax. It is advertised on-line at http://www.walmart.com/catalog/produ...uct_id=3756937 for $42.84 plus tax but he didn't know that when he went... ...don't know if the on-line price is supposed to be different than the in-store price. Installed the software, put the adapter in, fired it back up and wala... ...connected. Went to http://www.dslreports.com/speedtest?loc=1&premium to check download/upload speeds and initially got 3098/558 Kbps. Downloaded DrTCP from http://www.dslreports.com/drtcp to tweak some settings for him. Set the TCP Receive Window to 175200, Window Scaling On, Time Stamping Off, Selective ACK's On, Path MTU Discovery On, Black Hole Detection Off, Max Duplicate ACKs 2, Time To Live 128, Max MTU 1500. Rebooted and checked the Download/Upload speeds again and now they were 4500/558 Kbps. The Download Speed is about 3 Mbps slower than what I get. Is this due to it being wireless? He's not complaining, but I'm curious about why. He's happy as a little green frog in the rain. I thank you and so does he and his ol' lady.
The adapter is advertised with the following features:
- Connects your Desktop computer to a faster wireless network
- 35% faster than 802.11g
- Advanced security features including WEP and WPA
- Free 6-months of free Pop-up, Adware, and Spyware blocker
- Complies with 802.11g standards, backward compatible with 802.11b
- Lets your computers share your high-speed Internet connection as well as files, printers and hard drives
- Provides increased "real world" networking speeds, which means you will see overall speed improvements in "mixed mode" networking environments where other 802.11g devices may be present
- High-Speed Mode offers even faster speeds in pure HSM networking environments HSM technology is interoperable with all other wireless devices
