xp re-install problem
I tried to do a repair install on a hp system but ran into a problem after it copied the files and restarted to the gui installation part; it is stuck in a loop of constant rebooting. I tried to re-install again with the same result. I tried going into f8 safe mode and recovery console but it reboots as well. I have copied all the data off it so if I have to reformat and start fresh it isn't the end of the world but I would like to fix it.

You could try disconnecting/removing everything NOT necessary to actually run as a computer, eg, extra drives, cd/dvd, floppy, extra ram, video card if you have on-board, ethernet or modem cards in pci slots, etc.
Then try different ram module if it won't work with the first one (assuming you have more than one).

When you press F8 for safe mode is one of the options to not reboot on error or something like that. That should force to a blue screen error and with the information from that may give us a clue to what is going on.

I have one doing the same thing... a PB - but I can get into recovery console, so I am going to be turning off services until it boots!

When I try to go into repair console, it starts but then reboots. I have an identical hp box with a bad hard drive, so I'll try swapping it into that one. I know the memory and power supply are ok on that one since I just did a fresh install of xp to a new drive.

Check for mcafee services, and other antivirus services. I had one with Mcafee that did this do me.
