Norton AntiVirus 2006 Install TechCenter
Hi!
When i tried to install the Norton antiVirus 2006 TeachCenter Edition said:
MS windows Installer must be on your computer without it you cannot install this Symantec product. Do you want to update the MS windows now?
Downloaded the WindowsInstaller KB893803v2 at microsoft.com/downloads/ and tried to install the MSI updater , but the "Access was denied" it then uninstall and said partially updated & may not work properly. Can't imagine what is going on. The machine seems to work fine otherwise, but would like to get get an antivirus protection on the computer. I think i'm having problems in "registry" I uninstalle norton 2005 and got rid of all the updates files. There may be a problem in the log on folder.
Deleted the Cookies on Browser but that did not help. Also, tried to install the Windows Service Pack #2 but that would not install!
Thanks so much

You need to get windows installer 3.1 - you can get the downloadable and install anywhere version here
What reason did SP2 give for not installing?
Two things to do use the Norton removal tool here
Then run a repair install of XP
Never, ever approach a computer saying or even thinking "I will just do this quickly."

You could also get the new norton uninstaller and remove all signs of norton before you do a new clean install.
Usually Norton comes packaged with the windows installer and offers to update it

Hi NOONOO!
The SP2 starts a long process of installation and when it gets so far it disappears then a dialog appears and says the "Access was denied" it then uninstall and said partially updated & may not work properly.
The 3.1 Window installer does not work - tried to install many times. The removal tool saw WinFax and Norton CleanSweep did not remove those because could not find the CleanSweep installer. Were do I get the repair install of XP from Start/Help and Supprot?
Also, I get sometimes, a dialog at start-up saying "efese.exe" probelm occured to use your digital ID which could be used to identify your license & internet IP address. Think this might be the crux of the matter. Could set the computer to an earlier date but don't know how far I could go back.

Vernon your machine is definitely in need of a good virus/spyware/trojan hunt. Ferrit's link is a start, at the top of the antivirus forum you will find my advice on getting rid of spyware etc.

To me i would say thats alot of different virii and malware
You may have to use an offline scanner
Fist off turn system restore off completely
Then You could down load the trend micro scanner+update then reboot to safemode and
scan

Hi!
I decided to reformat: have copied all my personal files, favorites from the browser etc. and all mail folders in browser, but having trouble with the address book - went to Program Files/Outlook Express and copied the "wab" file address Book, but addresses did not show up in the other computer. Went back and copied the whole folder "Outlook Express" but haven't tried this yet on the other computer. Will this keep my addresses in order or all i need is the "wabmig" file in this folder? Anything else I should do?
Going to take my time before I pull the trigger.
Thanks for the support.

address books also have a pab extension
have you checked in tools, options, maintenance to check your actual store folder? You need that entire folder
You should also export the account settings which you do from the file export menu.
Export your contacts to a csv file - so you can rebuild it if necessary.
When you format you need to first zero fill the drive (what the hard drive companies call low level format). The you format the drive using the /u switch which unconditionally formats and has the effect of sorting out bad sectors. Anything you might have in the way of boot sector viruses, should be wiped out... to be sure you need to repeat the zero fill and /u formats a number of times - 7 I believe is the DoD recommendation.

REFORMATED link to Norton
Hi NOO NOO
I reformated using my toshiba software since this is a Home xp. But that did not work after it re-installed the virii were still there and even worse. Then i had a friend to do a complete wipe cleaning out the boot sectors and he said just reinstall your OS. But it was not that easy, for it kept telling me to insert your system and click on any key. But that was far as i got, since i don't have a floppy drive on this computer. I could hear the software churning in the background, but did not know any DOS comands. I called my server and he re-installed my toshiba software for $45.00 which i thought was a good deal with all the hassle i went through.
I did not understand your "format the drive using the /u switch" should have written back. Could you elaborate on that? The mail/favorites/addresses worked out fine. Did not lose anything

Formatting is wiping the drive... zero filling is filling the drive with zeros thereby obliterating everything on the drive.
The /u switch stands for "unconditional". The format therefore goes through all sectors wiping them and checking them.
No virus can survive repeated zero fill and unconditional formats.
