    xp hangs at startup screen

got an xp pro system that won't boot, hangs at "windows is starting up" splash screen. won't start in safe mode, tried ms kb Q307545 to replace the registry, no go. Is there a way to recover this installation or is it just too far gone? I guess I just don't like to admit defeat but I think this one is ready for a new install.

You could boot to the xp cd and at the first repair option run a chkdsk /r

If you have ruled out hardware, then an OS repair may work:

Thanks for the responses. I forgot to mention I tried chkdsk /r, and I did a repair install last night, still stuck. Not worth playing with anymore, I'll copy everything important to a second hard drive and clean install windows this evening.

Let us know how you make out.

And if it still has boot problems, start by switching out ram modules (assuming you have 2+).

    fixed

When I finally took out the drive and hooked it up into another machine, the antivirus software went balistic and found like 30 trojans and other malware. supposedly this machine had a fully updated virus program and was scanned recently, obviously NOT After a couple of scans I put it back in and it boots fine, now I'll have to educate this women on how to update and use her antivirus. Should know better than to beleive people, just glad it is done

AVG 7.5 , but it wasn't updated for a couple of months. She downloaded the new version in January but never updated it. When it did finally boot up properly it took down over 5 megs worth of updates.
