wireless crossover?
This may be a dumb question but is it possible to connect directly from a laptop with built in wireless to a printer (HP5850) with built in wireless without going through a wireless router/access point?

Yes... if the printer and the laptop both allow adhoc connection.
Never, ever approach a computer saying or even thinking "I will just do this quickly."

Check the manual for the printer and the software for controlling the wireless in your laptop...

Okay! It is working. I would not have thought it would be that easy. Noo Noo, in addition to your most helpful link I also referred to http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/u...02april08.mspx to check the laptop network settings and http://www.microsoft.com/resources/d....mspx?mfr=true to set up the printer port.
And downloaded the drivers of course.
