Is there such thing as a Firewire
My parents recently bought me a JVC camcorder for my birthday while they were on holiday in Australia.
I was well chuffed when I opened it up as I'd wanted a cam for ages. Anyway, along with the camera in the box came a firewire lead and board with 3 firewire ports to connect it up to a PC via the tower.
However, I own a laptop with only USB 2.0 ports and the camera is firewire use only.
I presumed there was a hub you could buy which had firewire adaptors on the front and a USB cable coming out of the back to plug into the side of my lappy. I took it the lot to a specialist and he said there was no such device.
I must've dreamt it.
Does such a device exist? I don't have a PC with a tower so the board is useless to me.
Thanks for any help.

does your laptop have a pc card or a pcmcia slot? If so, then there are firewire pcmcia/pc cards. Just make sure you get the right type for your slot. If you want more help with it, post the laptop make and full model.
oh yeah and here is a UK version of a usb to firewire adapter Be sure to tell the expert!

Also understand that FireWire is trademarked by Apple, for those who do not pay the liscencing fee, it's called IEEE 1394.

Ok here is the laptop spec No card slot... damn shame. The USB ports should be usb 2.0, but it doesn't actually say. Are they USB 2.0 as far as you know? The firewire/usb cable will only work properly with usb2.0
Specialist cables are always pricey... what country are you in?

Hmmm, I think it is a USB 2.0, what evidence could I have to support this?

OK, then look in device manager... For the usb hub/controller what is the exact description?
I looked around for another supplier of that cable - no dice. It comes with moving making software and considering what it does it's not a bad price. The shipping is going to hurt though!

On the device manager if I click on the USB controllers I get 6 ports. The first is a Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Hub controller, the next 2 are Standard OpenHCD USB Host Controller and the remaining 3 are USB Root Hubs if that makes any sense.
