XP Repair install - not detecting previous install

    Hello all,

Yet another motherboard replacement. Previously had XP Pro on it. Changed the board out and preceded to run repair install to fix the drivers,etc...

The original Windows CD is not detecting the previous installation, even though it is on the HD.

I ran chkdsk, it found some errors and corrected them. No change.

Is there something I can do to fix this?

    Thanks all,

    Jakkwb

Why not just get there data off and replace the OS. Better that way on a new motherboard anyway. No sense in waisting a lot of time.

I guess it was a service pack issue. The customer had 2002 version which did the above. I tried SP1 CD and it picked up the previous OS. Repair install worked OK.

I agree - I didn't want to spend any more time. I just thought I'd try it, and behold!

Just on another note, I recently was told that you can repair "missing" installations sometimes by going to the recovery console and typing bootcfg /scan. I have not had a chance to try this but reading about it on google seems to indicate it may help in locating and setting up the boot.ini properly again which may help the install disc pick it up.
