I would get the memory out of the old 300mhz machine and see if it fits the 700mhz and put xp on it if the memory fits. If not I would put ME on 700mhz and 98se on the 300mhz.

You can pretty much do what you like... when you say "best way" what do you intend to achieve?

Assuming it's Win2k ProI would think from a stability standpoint win2k would be the best option. Unless you are using programs that are reliant on the Win98 structure. (example being old dos initialized desktop games). Windows ME seems to have the worst reviews ever so I would avoid it. I myself used ME before and had no problems but then again I only had it for 3 months then I went to WinXP Pro. Of course there is always the variable of which do you like more.

Definitely 2k on both of them if you have nothing that is 9x/dos dependent.

If you can get the 700mhz ram up to 256 it will be quite a nippy machine and will even take xp.

Not to push you away from either of these Microsoft OS's. You should probably be aware that neither is supported by Microsoft, most importantly though, neither is supported by windows update. This means that your going to be stuck with a non-updated system.

Windows 2000/XP would run on this system if you kept it bear minimum, I have a p3-733 with 384 megs of ram, it runs XP, but i assure you i don't want to do anything else with it other then it's dedicated task (tv-tuner).

If your looking for basic word processing, browsing the internet and a few other basic usages, you may want to consider going "alternative", AKA, Linux.
