    dvd wont recognize audio cd's

Apparently after trying to install a DVR card(unsuccessfuly-thanks china) the DVD player will not recognize an audio CD. The DVD will play movies with no problem and data cd's work fine.
Using WMP it shows a music cd present but doewsn't recognize the .CDA files.
Ran thru all the common suggestions with no change.
    PC is Dell 8300 with GDR8162B DVD-ROM.
There are no cables connected for analog or digital to the back of the DVD, but it plays movies with sound perfectly, so not sure if they are required.
Worst part, this is my wifes pc and she LOVES to blow out PC speakers, so I'm in the dog house untill I get her music playing again!!

Wondering if something in the DVR software could have corrupted a codec file?

If you look at the DVD properties in Control Panel, Sounds and Audio Devices, is the 'enable digital cd audio' blah blah blah ticked?

Also list the codecs you have in
Control Panel> Sounds and audio devices >> Hardware tab - scroll down to audio codecs and double click. Select properties tab.

it will look something like this

Sorry for the delay, just got back from Calif.
I've worn out the Enable Digital check box, no difference.
Checked the codec's and the only one listed is "Microsoft PCM converter", how do I load more codec's?

IF you have the onboard sound chip then use this driver download:

IF you have the (stock) Soundblaster Audigy 2 card, try:

To reinstall default (operating system supplied) audio codecs in XP

    Start
    Control panel
    Add Hardware
    Next
    Yes already connected
Scroll down to bottom - add new hardware device
    Next
Install hardware I manually select from a list (advanced)
    Sound, video and game controllers
    Next
In left highlight standard system devices
In the right, highlight audio codecs
    Next and follow wizard

Repeat for media control devices if necessary.

    Thanks for the help!!
I tried all of the suggestions, but to no avail.
When WMP(ver. 11) starts it says "invalid URL or unrecognized file, click to try anyway" and fails to open music files. Doesen't seem to even try to access the CD.
Realplayer doesn't recognize the CD as music.
What I don't get is why media player classic can play cd music with no issues!
For music loaded on the PC or inserting movie DVD's, no issues and sound works perfect!
I can usualy battle my way thru most issues, but this one has me stumped.
Getting to the point of wipping out the XP installation cd and starting from scratch(arghhhhh)!

    Try a repair install first...
It over lays the original files then you have to do you windows updates again, but it leaves your data alone. Boot with the xp cd, do not take the first repair option, go all the way through setup till it reaches the partition screen, then choose the repair option given there.

I think you are still missing basic system devices. These can only be removed deliberately...
