Exceeding memory recommended by mfr
My motherboard mfrer ASUS A7V8X-LA recommends upto 2Gb memory but my original mfr (compaq) recommends only 1Gb max for my Compaq Presario SR1055CL.
Who is right? Why does Compaq recommend a different/lower limit on memory? Appreciate any help you could provide.

Could be the BIOS was only able to see 1 Gig of RAM at the time Compaq acquired the motherboards. The version of the bios would be able to tell you what the limit is. I suggest reading compaqs data on the computer and see if there were any updates issued that would help the system recognize larger memory. If you choose to update your bios and you haven't ever updated a BIOS before I would suggest conferring with us before jumping into that endeavor.
One Script to rule them all.
One Script to find them.
One Script to bring them all,
and clean up after itself.

Also, don't forget that the motherboards purchased in bulk from a manufacturer such as Asus by a company such as Compaq are often customized for maximum wholesale price reduction by leaving out some features.

It could be compaq limited the bios to this as well rather then it was only able to see that much. Manufacturer likely made it to see 2 gigs and compaq asked to have it limited to 1 gig
