WD Hard drive new install hanging

    Hi,

I'm currently attempting to install a new WD HD in an eMachine T6410,
Using the utility CD I receive:

Attempting Int 13 IO to drive 80 ; no response

    attempting PM ATA Identify

After this system just hangs. I have attempted various HD jumper configurations also have use XP boot cd to install OS and config., but far as it gets is Starting Windows please wait. Any help would be appreciated.

    Welcome to Windrivers 4matsee

Are you adding a 2nd hard drive or replacing the existing one?
Which model WD are you using?
Are you using the original recovery cd or an ordinary XP cd?

Oh yes love those bios limitiations....you are probably installing a drive bigger than the bios can comminicate to your software...so here the best suggest I can come up with

Can the bios see the drive? if not you may have to update your bios..unhook any other hard drive and hook up new one and boot to the bioes and see if drive is there...if not and you are sure you hooked up correctly, update your bios carefully

once the bios sees the drive, reinstall any old working drives as they were and install new drive as a slave...

    boot to windows

install the wd software on the cd..it should detect the new drive and ask you what you want to do to make ....it bootable or a slave...choose and follow software directions

if you made it bootable..shut down and hook up new drive as a master, reboot an put in restore cd...you should be able to install windows from there if you want a clean install

No actually I'm replacing the original HD(Seagate 160 gig) came new with unit. It has developed some problems and has several thousand photos and other data which needs transfering, eventually to an external HD.
The WD model is WD3200JBRTLW (320 gig)
I'm using an ordinary XP home edition.
    Thanks for asking.

This seems to be an IDE (PATA) drive... the system is configured to use a SATA drive.

I assume you have put this on the same IDE channel as the optical drive?

Scrub the mission! I just got off a chat with eMachine tech support that informed me this system will only support up to a 250 Gig.....
Well I guess I'll have to save it for later on. And back to Walmart for a 250 gig. Thanks everyone for the help
