Missing Multimedia audio controller

I formatted and reinstalled windows xp pro. on my pc, but I have no sound except BEEP (error message). I checked device manager list and found yellow question mark with multimedia audio controller. I tried installing different driver files (i.e., SOUNDMAX) from web but doesnt work. When I tried to install the downloaded driver files from web, error message that XP displayed was
' driver not found ! reboot your system, and run this setup again '

btw, i installed many different driver files from internet and it caused multimedia audio controller to disappear from Device Manager list. It doesnt show on the Device Manager device list anymore even when I press 'scan for hardware changes' button on the toolbar. I dont know how to manually add it back and not sure where I can find the correct driver for sound.
