computer does not recognize audio or blank cd's

I have updated the driver, uninstalled and reinstalled the device, and removed any software that could be creating the conflict, but my RW DVD player is not recognizing blank or audio CD's, although it plays DVD's and data CD's with no problem. I am sure this is a software/configuration problem. I am using Windows Vista Home Premium, Service Pack 1, on a Toshiba Satellite X205-S9800, with an Intel Core 2 Duo T5550 processor.

I have looked at all the threads that have reported the same problem and Vista does not have the "enable digital CD audio" configuration that is always mentioned in the replies.

I tried deleting the upperfilter and lowerfilter files in the system registry (as recommended by Microsoft in cases of software conflicts), but still no luck.

    Welcome to Windrivers lottamiata

What music player do you use when you put in a music cd?

On the blanks, have you tried a different brand of blank? What are you using to burn a cd?

Oh and do you mean that you don't always get the "autoplay" asking you what to do with music and blanks?
Never, ever approach a computer saying or even thinking "I will just do this quickly."

Does the computer boot from a stamped CD? That's the easy test before trying to mess with the registry.
If it doesn't then try cleaning it. If it still doesn't boot it's about to die.
